So, you decided you want to up your hair game and get Hair Extensions…How, What and Why??
They are amazing and there are so many options out there, and so many decisions to make, like:
Type, Color, Length, Volume.
These are best decided with your stylist. So, let the stylist guide you and help you make the best choices for your hair. Don’t know where to start? Here are some tips!
FIRST, you want to make sure you are getting legitimate, quality, 100% Human Hair! Why? Because you want it to last, you want it to look natural and blend with your hair. There are a lot of extensions out there…be choosy.
SECOND, you need to decide what your hair goals are. Are you looking for volume, length, or both?
And THIRD, you need to decide what type of hair extensions are best for your hair type and hair goals.
Let’s look at some choices we love:
First there are the traditional TAPE IN EXTENSIONS. These are great for adding some volume and length. If you have thin or fine hair, this is a great option because it won’t weigh down your hair. They come in lengths of 14”, 18” and 22”.
The other option is SEW-IN WEFT EXTENSIONS, these are great for those who have a medium to thicker texture because the wefts come pre-layered with three wefts sewn together to provide triple the volume. They come in lengths of 18.5” or 22.5”.
Once you choose, there are things you need to know (for both weft and tape-ins).
They should last up to 6 months, depending on how you care for them. You need to have them “moved up” by your stylist every 6-8 weeks. After 8 weeks, you’ll start to feel pressure and irritation on your scalp. The longer you leave them in, the higher chance of hair breakage. Salon maintenance is key!
At-home maintenance is also a must, so, now what should you do??
- Wait 48 hours after install to shampoo. (and use sulfate free shampoo).
- And when you do shampoo, brush out your hair before.
- If you can, let your hair air dry.
- If you must blow dry (most of us do), never blow-dry upside down and use a heat protectant.
- Brush hair at least 3x a day, brushing underneath the extensions down to the ends (this avoids tangling and matting).
- And, please, Do not sleep in wet hair (tangles!).
